Some 6.9 million condoms were distributed in 2023, up 33% on the previous year, according to the Directorate General of Health (DGS), which on Tuesday launched a campaign to encourage continued use of this contraceptive method.
Data from the DGS awareness program and free distribution of prevention materials released on International Condom Day shows that in addition to male (external) and female (internal) condoms, approximately 1.9 million lubricant gel packs were also distributed, representing an increase of 15% compared to 2022.
To mark this date, the General Directorate of Health, through national health programs on STIs, HIV infection and viral hepatitis, is launching a campaign to encourage consistent condom use by disseminating information on social networks and “websites”. .
“Using condoms is one of the most effective ways to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In addition, condoms can also be used to prevent pregnancy,” the DGS statement emphasizes.
During 2022 and according to notifications received until 30 June 2023, 804 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed in Portugal. In 91.9% of cases, transmission occurred through sexual contact.
The DGS emphasizes the importance of promoting sexuality education and facilitating access to condoms, which are highly effective in preventing sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies.
The Directorate General of Health’s free distribution of prevention and information materials is supported by non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, health centers, hospitals and prisons.
