Shop owners in the village of Mira de Aire have been battling a wave of thefts for months. Crimes, small in size, but driven to despair by the sheer number of victims, are an almost everyday occurrence. “I sense people’s social anxiety,” admitted Alcides Oliveira, chairman of the parish council.
Sidalia Carreira, who had never seen her flower shop robbed in 23 years of business before this spate of crimes, was the target of three thefts in less than a month. However, what worries her most is the defenseless elderly. “There are old people at home with hidden money. I’m afraid there will be violence,” he warned.
According to Alcides Oliveira, there is an urgent need to find solutions to avoid problematic targets. “I am afraid that there will be problems both for those who were affected and, perhaps, for those who try to do this. [fazer]”, the mayor emphasized.
