Mozambican police seize almost half a ton of cannabis from an abandoned boat

Mozambican police have seized almost half a ton of cannabis from an abandoned ship in Mossuril, Nampula province, northern Mozambique, an official source told Lusa today.

Enina Tsinin, a spokeswoman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) in Nampula, said Saturday that 481 kilograms of cannabis were seized, wrapped in one- and two-kilogram bags abandoned on a boat in the mangroves at Matibane Beach. in this province.

“We also found several jars of sweets, bottles of cannabis seed oil, mushrooms believed to be drugs, two pistols and 40 rounds of ammunition,” the spokeswoman added.

According to Enina Tsinine, tablets and other elements used for the production of hashish were also found on the ship.

Cernick said the seized products will still be analyzed in a laboratory to determine the type of drugs, noting that no arrests have yet been made in the case.

Some international organizations identify Mozambique as a transit corridor for international drug trafficking heading to Europe and the United States, especially heroin from Asia, but seizures of cocaine from South America have also increased.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic of Mozambique reported on the 5th that there were 1,251 criminal cases related to drug trafficking in 2023, up from 1,035 in 2022, warning of an increase in drug trade and consumption in the country.
