A bolide, or large meteor, entered the Earth’s atmosphere this Sunday and produced a trail of light that was visible in several places in northern Portugal around 6:30 p.m. This phenomenon was photographed and published by many people on social networks and on sites such as MeteoTrásosMontes. There are reports of sightings of this phenomenon in Guimarães, Viseu, Montalegre, Vila Verde, Gaia or Cabeceiras de Basto.
An eyewitness told MeteoTrásOsMontes that at 18:26 he saw “a strong beam of light, followed by a strong explosion.” According to astronomer Rui Agostinho, this indicates that it was a fireball. “If there is evidence of a person who saw and heard the explosion, it is because it was a fireball, a large meteor that entered the atmosphere at a slower speed and left a huge mark in the sky,” he said. CM expert, emphasizing that “this is not a UFO, this is something completely normal.”
“The images show that it followed a plane-like trajectory, flew high and left a very horizontal and luminous trail across the atmosphere. The zigzags show that the trail remained in the atmosphere for some time and changed with the wind,” the professor said. at the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon, stressing that it is normal for these cars to “fall apart and not reach the ground.”
