“Portugal is firmly on the side of Ukraine from the very beginning”: Costa about two years of war

The Prime Minister of Portugal said this Saturday that Portugal will stand alongside the “heroic resistance” of the Ukrainian people and armed forces for as long as necessary until a just and lasting peace is achieved.

This position was expressed by António Costa in messages published this Saturday on his account on the social network X (formerly Twiiter).

“Two years ago, a war began in Ukraine – a tragic, unjustified, illegal war, the responsibility for which lies solely with Russia. Two years of heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people and armed forces, the struggle for their freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. he wrote to the Prime Minister.

In his messages, published in Portuguese and English, António Costa emphasizes that “Portugal has been firmly on the side of Ukraine from the very beginning.”

“We will continue in the same spirit as long as necessary until Ukraine can live in a just and lasting peace,” he added.

The prime minister will take part in a high-level meeting in Paris on Monday in support of Ukraine, convened by the French president, as the Russian invasion marks two years.

According to the office of António Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal has been invited by Emmanuel Macron to participate in a meeting in support of Kyiv, which will bring together several heads of state and government at the Elysee Palace.

The Paris meeting, according to an Elysee Palace source quoted by EFE, “will allow us to explore available means to strengthen cooperation between partners in supporting Ukraine.”

In recent days, several European governments have insisted on the need to better coordinate the supply of military equipment to Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with Britain, France and Germany and is negotiating similar agreements with other countries.

On February 1, EU leaders reached an agreement on financial support for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros.
