European Union (EU) agriculture ministers meet this Monday in Brussels to review measures to help farmers. A demonstration is planned near the Council building, which will be attended by a CAP delegation.
Ministers will discuss the European Commission’s proposals to help the agricultural sector in crisis, as well as the various national measures taken to respond to the sector’s concerns, which have been expressed in recent weeks in several member states, including Portugal.
Farmers complain in particular about excessive bureaucracy in accessing EU support, the cost of living and fuel, and the discrepancy between producer and consumer prices.
Thus, simultaneously with the Council meeting, at which Portugal is represented by the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Seu Antunes, another event takes place, bringing together, along with the EU institutions, producers from several Member States, as well as a delegation from the Confederation. presented by Farmers of Portugal (CAP).
The community leader announced on Thursday that he would propose simplifying Common Agricultural Policy rules such as agricultural controls and would launch an online survey between March and May to hear the sector’s grievances.
Brussels proposes, in particular, to simplify the CAP rules, such as some of the cross-compliance requirements that EU farmers must comply with and the exemption of small agricultural holdings of less than ten hectares from the controls associated with compliance with these requirements.
