The case of a former employee of the Centro Social de Esgueira kindergarten in Aveiro, accused of ill-treatment, will go to trial after the accused refused to attend classes this Monday.
A court source told Lusa that the investigative debate, which had been scheduled for Monday morning at the Aveiro criminal court, did not take place because the defendant withdrew the order she herself had requested.
Briefing is an optional phase of the criminal process whose purpose is to assess whether there is sufficient evidence to bring a person accused of a crime to trial.
The case therefore proceeds to the trial stage based on the charges filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PP), which charged the defendant with nine offenses of ill-treatment in connection with events that occurred in 2019 and 2020.
During this period, the accused allegedly assaulted several children aged 1 to 3 years in her care and forced the children, who had vomited on their plates, to eat food where their own vomit had fallen.
The indictment describes an episode in which the defendant placed a piece of pear in the mouth of a girl, who choked and stopped breathing, remaining “motionless and with her eyes wide open.”
Following this situation, the defendant delivered several forceful blows to the child’s back, but to no avail, and the girl threw away the fruit when one of the deputies removed her from the chair and placed her on the changing table in a side-safe position. .
In another situation, the defendant discounted a 2-year-old boy’s complaints of abdominal pain by stating that “it was tape” and that it must have been “gas.”
The boy was eventually taken to Aveiro Hospital after a teaching assistant contacted the National Institute of Emergency Medicine and he was diagnosed with persistent vomiting and acute gastroenteritis.
The indictment, on the other hand, states that the teacher did not allow aides to hold the children, and when they cried, “she played music very loudly on the radio and sang at a high pitch, making the room environment unsuitable for their activities.” well-being.” children.”
The deputy alleges that the defendant repeatedly violated the “physical integrity, psychological and emotional well-being” of these children, affecting their self-esteem and development as children.
