The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) has arrested eight people and opened seven criminal cases in the Beja region for operating gambling outside of legally permitted venues, it was announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, ASAE said that in recent weeks several inspection activities have been carried out in the Alentejo region aimed at combating illegal gambling, which also resulted in the seizure of materials worth a total of 30 thousand euros.
Contacted by the Lusa agency, an ASAE source said that the inspection actions were carried out in the municipalities of Beja, Ferreira do Alentejo and Aljustrel, and stated that the eight men detained were aged between 26 and 47 years.
In addition to the eight arrests, the operation, carried out through the Southern Regional Unit – Operational Unit Evora ASAE, resulted in a total of seven criminal cases for the offense of gambling outside of legally permitted locations.
According to the ASAE, nine economic operators were inspected, namely food establishments, “some of which had hidden premises with limited access” in which “some operating equipment”, such as slot machines, was inspected.
From these premises, 24 illegal slot machines and corresponding mechanisms for depositing valuables, as well as 570 euros in cash, were seized.
