Civil Defense warns of weekend with strong winds, sea waves and snowfall

The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) warned the population this Friday due to forecasts of bad weather for the next 48 hours with strong winds, rough seas and snowfalls.

Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), ANEPC issued a statement asking the population to take preventive measures to avoid accidents.

The IPMA forecasts strong winds, more intense on the west coast and in the highlands, with gusts of up to 95 kilometers per hour, high seas on the west coast and snowfall in the northern and central highlands of more than 1400/1600 meters during the season. night and dawn on Saturday, during the day decreasing to 700/900 meters.

Given changing weather conditions, ANEPC warns of the need to take extra care on the road, with slippery road surfaces due to the possibility of ice, frost and snow accumulation, possible accidents on the coast due to rough seas, falling branches or trees, and infrastructure, associated with communication and energy networks, in addition to thermal discomfort among the population due to a sharp drop in minimum temperature.

Civil Defense reminds that “the potential impact of these consequences can be minimized, particularly by adopting appropriate behavior,” providing some guidance, especially for historically most vulnerable areas.

It recommends, among other things, paying increased attention to the most vulnerable groups of the population (infants, chronically ill people, older or more isolated people, outdoor workers and the homeless), ensuring adequate support for loose structures , namely scaffolding, billboards and other suspended structures, and be careful when moving and staying near forested areas, paying attention to the possibility of falling branches and trees due to strong winds.

Special care should also be taken when traveling near coastlines and coastal areas that have historically been more vulnerable to landfall, avoiding travel and stay in these areas, and not engaging in sea-related activities such as sport fishing, water sports and seaside walks. , also avoid parking vehicles very close to the embankment, driving carefully and avoiding driving on roads affected by snow accumulation.
