English football legend Paul Gascoigne has described himself as a “sad drunk” and revealed that he is homeless and lives in a room in his agent’s house.
“I used to be a happy drunk, but I’m not anymore… I’m a sad drunk,” the former player, now 56, told the High Performance podcast.
In 2020, Gascoigne underwent surgery to kick his drinking habit, but admits it didn’t work. The Englishman admits that he continues to drink, usually alone.
The former midfielder said that after retiring in 2005, he began to “go downhill” and became addicted to alcohol.
“I don’t drink, I drink at home. If I want to have a good day, I just go to the pub. If I want to have a good day, I take a fishing rod and go fishing,” he admitted.
Gascoigne was recognized as one of the most talented Englishmen of his generation and had a major cultural influence in the 90s, recalls The keeper. However, his life was marked by addiction.
“Just the other day I was at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting,” he said.
The former player helped England reach the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. He played for clubs such as Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Everton.
“I had a tough time over the years with injuries. If I hadn’t missed four years of football, I would have played 100 caps,” recalled the former athlete, who ended his career with 56 caps for England.
