The continent’s weather will worsen from late afternoon this Wednesday, with rain, strong winds, rough seas and snowfall until Sunday, especially in the center and north of the country, IPMA warned.
In a note, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) warned on Wednesday afternoon that from the end of the day the rain would come “lightly at first” to the west coast of the continent and “gradually spread to the rest of the continent.” area and becomes moderate to severe at times with hail and thunderstorms” between Thursday and Sunday.
The winds will be strong at times, with stronger winds on Friday, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour (kph) along the coast and 100kph in the continent’s highlands, the IPMA said.
The institute also stressed that the seas will be strong, especially on the west coast, where wave heights are typically 5 to 6 meters and could exceed 7 meters north of Cabo Raso on Saturday.
“Significant snowfall in the northern and central highlands” is also expected through Sunday, starting at dawn and Thursday morning at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela.
“Snow accumulations on the ground at certain times can exceed 20 cm at an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, and at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela, about one meter of snow can accumulate at the end of the period,” they emphasized.
From 03:00 Thursday, all areas of the continent except Santarem, Portalegre and Évora will be under a yellow warning for rainfall, the IPMA said.
Guarda and Castelo Branco will be under an orange warning from 3:00 Friday until 12:00 Saturday due to snowfall.
The Navy and the National Maritime Authority (NAM) have recommended this Wednesday that the maritime community and the general public implement a “state of constant surveillance” at sea and in coastal areas, namely, strengthen mooring and maintain close surveillance of moored and anchored vessels, avoiding walks along the sea, piers protecting ports, cliffs and beaches, as well as recreational activities in the most vulnerable areas.
In a statement, authorities warned that sea conditions would be characterized by swells coming from the northwest, with waves that could reach eight meters and a maximum height of 14 meters, as well as average winds of up to 65 km/h and gusts. at speeds of up to 120 km/h, coming from the northwestern quadrant.
The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) also warned on Tuesday of worsening weather conditions from Wednesday and Thursday.
An Orange Alert (second most severe on a scale of three) is issued by the IPMA whenever a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation” occurs, and a Yellow Alert (least severe) occurs when a risk situation arises for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
