In mainland Portugal until 21:00 this Friday, 349 incidents due to bad weather were reported, with Greater Lisbon and the Porto metropolitan area hit hardest, a civil protection source told Lusa.
From 00:00 to 21:00 this Friday, 349 incidents were recorded, which particularly affected the metropolitan area of Porto and Greater Lisbon, a source from the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) said.
Major events include falling trees and buildings, flooding and road clearing, he added.
The same source noted that there is no evidence of significant damage or casualties due to bad weather, explaining that the number of incidents across the country has decreased over the past few hours.
In a previous report, an ANEPC source told Lusa there were 171 incidents between 00:00 and 17:00 this Friday.
This Friday, ANEPC warned the public to take preventive measures due to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the next 48 hours caused by rough seas, wind and snowfall.
The areas of Faro, Beja, Setubal, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra are under a red warning from Saturday to Sunday due to rough seas, with maximum wave heights of up to 14 metres, IPMA said this Friday.
The IPMA also placed the areas of Vila Real, Braga and Viana do Castelo on the red level due to snowfall from midnight to 9am on Saturday. Due to snowfall, these three areas will continue to be under an orange warning from 9pm this Friday until midnight, before returning to orange from 9am Saturday until 9am Sunday.
From 21:00 this Friday until 9:00 Sunday, the IPMA is also forecasting heavy snowfall and has placed the areas of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco under an orange warning, and Porto, Aveiro and Coimbra under a yellow warning.
Intense snowfall could cause disruption through accumulation and possible ice formation, as well as road closures, damage to buildings or trees and damage to local supplies, IPMA warned.
Viana do Castelo, Braganca, Vila Real, Braga, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon, Setubal, Leiria, Évora, Beja and Faro are also under yellow warning this Friday due to strong winds, especially in the highest lands on the coast.
On Saturday there will also be a yellow warning for strong winds in Faro, Setubal, Lisbon, Leiria, Santarem, Beja, Aveiro and Coimbra.
Given the changing weather conditions, ANEPC urges increased caution on the roads as road surfaces are slippery due to the potential for ice, frost and snow accumulation.
It also warns of possible accidents on the coast due to high seas, falling branches or trees, as well as infrastructure related to communications and energy networks, as well as thermal discomfort among the population due to a sharp drop in minimum temperatures.
