Civil Defense recorded 171 incidents, most of which occurred in the regions of Porto and Viseu.

Civil protection recorded 171 incidents until 17:00 this Friday related to bad weather, mainly in the regions of Porto and Viseu, but without casualties, an official source said.

“Since 00:00 we have recorded 171 incidents, especially in the Porto metropolitan area and the Viseu region, but all the incidents were of minor importance and were related to falling trees and falling structures, mainly due to the force of the wind. …was felt in the last few hours,” Commander Paulo Santos of the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) told Lusa.

According to an ANEPC field officer, some incidents were also the result of “road clearing or sudden surface flooding due to clogged drainage.”

In Alges, in the municipality of Oeiras, Lisbon district, “a lamp fell on several cars,” he said.

“We do not have significant damage to infrastructure and we are not aware of any injuries,” he added.

“In Greater Lisbon, with the exception of the municipality of Lisbon, which is the territory of the Sapadores fire regiment, we have 16 incidents registered,” said Paulo Santos, but there are also situations that are not very serious.

An ANEPC spokesman believes that “some more intense rainfall” is still expected, but hopes that “it will not lead to anything very significant” in terms of events.

This Friday, ANEPC warned the public to take preventive measures due to deteriorating atmospheric conditions over the next 48 hours, rough seas, wind and snowfall.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts snowfall of more than 800/1000 meters in the northern and central areas over the next two days, as well as rough seas with waves of up to seven meters. on the coast of the western region, reaching a maximum height of 11 meters.

On the coast and in the highlands, winds are also forecast to increase, with gusts of up to 80 km/h.

Given the changing weather conditions, ANEPC urges increased caution on the roads as road surfaces are slippery due to the potential for ice, frost and snow accumulation.

It also warns of possible accidents on the coast due to high seas, falling branches or trees, as well as infrastructure related to communications and energy networks, as well as thermal discomfort among the population due to a sharp drop in minimum temperatures.
