Cillian Murphy, who won the Best Actor Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, felt “overwhelmed, humbled, grateful and proud” to be the first Irishman to win the award, the actor said backstage at the ceremony.
“This is very important to me,” Cillian Murphy said in the interview room where Lusa was present. “We support artists very well in Ireland and I think we should continue to support the next generation of actors and directors, it’s vital.”
Murphy, who won the award for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film, which also won best picture of the year, said he was stunned by the win and didn’t even remember what he said in his acceptance speech.
“This film is so special to me and Chris and I have such a special relationship that I feel privileged to continue working with him,” the actor said.
“I’m very proud that this film is provocative, questions and challenges, and that so many people want to see it.”
In his acceptance speech, Cillian Murphy made reference to the war: “I am very proud to be here tonight. We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and, for better or worse, we continue to live in Oppenheimer’s Peace, so I would like to dedicate this film to those who fight for world peace.”
The actor described Christopher Nolan as an excellent director and an extraordinary screenwriter, noting the achievements of twenty years of working with him.
“I can’t believe my luck,” he said. “I auditioned for him when I was a kid and I thought it would catch on and it would be cool to just be in the same room with Chris for a couple of hours,” he recalls. “And now I’m here.”
In 1990, Irish actress Brenda Fricker won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Jim Sheridan’s My Left Foot.
Christopher Nolan won the Oscar for Best Director, and Oppenheimer was named Best Picture. Robert Downey Jr. also took home the Best Supporting Actor statuette for Dream Night for the Universal Pictures film.
Jennifer Lame stood out, winning the Oscar for Best Editing, the first woman in a decade to do so, and for a film with a strong female bias.
“There was an incredible group of women working on this film, and I think we’ll eventually get to the point where we have 50-50 representation,” executive producer Emma Thomas, Nolan’s wife, said in the interview room. “Things are much better and I’m proud to have worked with so many talented women on the film.”
Composer Ludwig Göransson also received a statuette for best soundtrack and Hoyte van Hoytema for best cinematography. In total, the 2023 blockbuster took home seven statuettes, leaving the Dolby Theater in Hollywood as the most awarded film of the night.
