ABBA refuse to cooperate with Trump campaign

ABBA, the most famous Swedish band of all time, wants to stop Donald Trump from using one of their most iconic songs, “The Winner Takes It All,” in the current election campaign for the presidency of the United States. The production company representing the band has already contacted the Republican candidate’s team and asked them to stop using the theme (and the video) in speeches and events involving Trump.

A spokesman for the candidate immediately stepped forward to ensure that everything was done legally: “The campaign had a license to play ABBA’s music under our agreement with BMI and ASCAP,” he told the Associated Press. But on the other side of the fence, the answer was categorical: “No request was made; therefore, no permission or license was granted.”

ABBA are not the first to speak out against the abuse of their work by the Trump campaign. Tom Petty, REM, Adele and even the late Sinéad O’Connor have raised the same barrier in the past, and earlier this month, in the current presidential race, Celine Dion filed a similar complaint, while the Foo Fighters announced that they would be claiming copyrights and donating them to the Democratic campaign in response to what they see as “abuse.”
