A Brazilian court sentenced Robinho to nine years in prison in the country

Brazil’s Supreme Court (STJ) this Wednesday ordered former footballer Robinho to serve in the country the nine-year prison sentence he was sentenced to in Italy in 2017 for rape.

The STJ Court, with nine votes in favor and two against, confirmed the sentence handed down by the Italian justice system for a crime committed in 2013.

A special jury composed of STJ’s most senior ministers also ruled that Robson de Souza, known worldwide as Robinho, should be immediately arrested and that the Federal Court of Santos, where the former footballer currently resides, should implement this decision.

Robinho’s defense has already announced that it will appeal and is asking the former Brazil national team player to wait for the decision on the appeal to be released. Robinho, now 40, was sentenced by Italian justice to nine years in prison in 2013 for a rape that occurred in 2013, but when the final decision was handed down in 2022, the former footballer was already in Brazil.

Since the country does not extradite its citizens, Italy has asked the country’s judiciary to serve the sentence in Brazil. Trained to play football at Santos in Sao Paulo, Robinho moved to Spanish club Real Madrid at the age of 21 in 2005, where he spent three and a half seasons before joining English club Manchester City.

After a season and a half with City, he returned to Santos for a year on loan before signing with Milan, whom he represented from 2010 to 2014, during which time he allegedly committed the crime for which he was convicted. .

In 2014, he returned to Brazilian football for two more seasons with Santos before moving to Atlético Mineiro for two seasons (2016 and 2017), with a spell in Guangzhou, China in between.

He also returned to Europe, namely Turkey, to represent Sivasspor and Basaksehir, the club where he ended his career in 2020. He played 102 times for Brazil, scoring 29 goals and winning the Copa America and two Confederations Cups. . .
