The Bulgarian Citizens for European Development (GERB, conservative) party announced this Sunday that it is no longer trying to form a coalition government after the breakdown of negotiations with the liberal We Pursue Change – Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) party.
According to GERB, which called for new early elections, the sixth in three years, the talks collapsed after the PP-DB put forward new demands.
Maria Gabriel, GERB’s prime ministerial candidate, expressed her readiness to resume negotiations after the new vote and asked all parties to analyze their campaign strategies, Bulgarian digital portal Novinite reports.
Gabriel said that GERB would ensure interaction between the ministries of defense and energy and that the exchanges had been agreed upon at the Ministry of Interior, adding that there was agreement on the main issues discussed.
“But we will not allow them to use us and put pressure on us, constantly change the conditions and rules. This is over,” said Denitsa Sacheva, another GERB representative.
The last government, led by Nikolai Denkov, resigned in early March to facilitate a rotation agreed among coalition members in 2023. Gabriel will become the new prime minister, and Denkov will be her “number two”.
New elections could make it difficult to introduce the euro on January 1, 2025, as planned. Bulgaria also plans to join the Schengen area on March 31, covering only air and sea borders for now.
