An industrial accident that resulted in the death of 40-year-old Rui Martins, one of the musicians of the band Santos & Pecadores, is being examined in the Santarém court. This is a crime involving a breach of safety regulations, aggravated by the result in which the Pye company that hired him, Poweryieldenergia, based in Montemor o Novo, and two managing partners aged 33 and 42 years.
Rui Martins died on May 14, 2021, while washing solar panels on the roof of a factory in Tremes, Santarem. The musician put his foot on a translucent plate, which broke, and died immediately, falling helplessly to the floor of the warehouse, according to the indictment of the prosecutor’s office (MP).
After investigating the incident, the MP concluded that the victim did not have personal protective equipment against the risk of falling from a height, since the company he worked for had never provided him with it since December 2020. As a result of the accident, he was working without required fall arrest restraints, such as seat belts or harnesses. Moreover, he did not have the necessary training to safely maintain solar panels.
Rui Martins found this work during the pandemic, when there were no shows. He was a musician by profession and was part of the famous group Santos & Pecadores, together with Olavo Bilak, Pedro Cunha, Pascoal Simões, Arthur Santos and Pedro Almeida.
