Prime Minister-designate Luis Montenegro will present this Thursday at 18:00 to the President of the Republic the names of the ministers of his minority government, before taking office next Tuesday at the National Palace of Ajuda.
This calendar was announced by the PSD President himself after an audience with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in which he was nominated for the post of Prime Minister, following the early legislative elections on March 10, which brought victory to the Democratic Alliance (PSD, CDS coalition). PP and PPM).
Then Luis Montenegro said that he expected to form a government based on a majority “consisting of PSD and SDS-PP deputies”, since he did not have the support of an absolute majority in parliament.
Montenegro and the ministers of the XXIV Constitutional Government take office on Tuesday, and the secretaries of state two days later.
On Wednesday, outgoing Prime Minister António Costa, after an eight-year mandate, received Luís Montenegro at the official residence of São Bento, marking a testament to the leadership of the executive branch.
The day before, the SDP and the Liberal Initiative said they would not move forward “at this time to celebrate broad agreements,” including on the formation of a new government.
After the inauguration next week, the next step will be the presentation of the government’s program.
According to the Constitution, this document with guidelines for governance for the next four years is submitted to the Assembly of the Republic for consideration within a maximum of ten days after its appointment, which must occur in the first 12 days of April.
The Constitution also stipulates that the government will begin to exercise its functions only after its program has been evaluated by Parliament, unless it is rejected.
