The 31-year-old mother of six minor children died Thursday evening in a hospital in the Brazilian city of Santos, on the coast of Sao Paulo state, a day after being shot in the head during another military police crackdown.
Authorities say Ednea Fernandez was wounded during a violent standoff with the gunmen, but her family and witnesses say there was no confrontation and only police fired.
Ednea Fernandez was sitting on a bench in Plaza José Lamacchia in the Bom Retiro neighborhood talking to a friend around 6 pm on Wednesday when she was shot. A single shot rang out, and Ednia, who was hit in the back of the head, lost consciousness.
People present in the square stated that there was no clash with the criminals, and the shot was fired by a military police officer who was riding a motorcycle. Another complaint is that the police failed to assist Edneya, who was taken by members of the public to the UPA (emergency department) in the north-west zone and then, given the severity of her injuries, transferred to the Santa Casa de Santos Hospital. where she ended up, dying a day later.
Since a policeman was killed at the entrance to a favela in Santos earlier this year, the military police sent reinforcements of more than 400 agents from elite battalions to the towns of the so-called Baixada Santista and carried out a real massacre. In less than three months, the region’s military police have already killed 55 people, according to the corporation, all dangerous criminals shot first, but there are countless reports of victims who were killed unarmed and had already surrendered, and even the visually impaired and disabled were held in during these controversial operations.
