The bishop of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado, this Sunday spoke out against the dissemination of videos of beheadings in this northern Mozambican province devastated by armed groups, calling for the spread of violent images.
“I am very surprised when I see people sending videos with gruesome images of beheaded people,” said Antonio Juliass, speaking at an Easter vigil on Saturday evening.
“We must not preach doom,” Juliass urged.
The religious leader also criticized the circulation of videos of road accident victims, questioning whether the practice desensitizes people.
He called on Mozambican society to mobilize in favor of building peace and solidarity.
Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency for six years, with Daesh claiming responsibility for some attacks.
After a slight lull in 2023, these attacks have become more frequent in recent weeks, leaving an estimated 100,000 people displaced in February alone and a trail of destruction, death and lost families.
