This Wednesday, Pedro Nuno Santos accused Prime Minister Luis Montenegro of delivering a speech “without ambition, without vision, without plan” for the country when the government took power.
The PS general secretary saw an “opposition-oriented performance” and the construction of a “campaign narrative,” anticipating “government harassment and complaints.”
“In the last elections, the AD won with a margin of 50 thousand votes. It has two more deputies than the PS. (…) It cannot expect the PS to give it a majority that the Portuguese people did not give it,” noted He. out.
On Tuesday, Luis Montenegro vowed “not to govern for the sake of propaganda” because “the theory of a full treasury leads to expenses.” According to Pedro Nuno Santos, “the full treasury theory is the result of the AD campaign and is reflected in the AD macroeconomic scenario.” The pressure to use the budget surplus “comes from AD’s election campaign promises, which accuse the PS of being unambitious,” he noted.
The socialists refuse to be the “cane of the SDP” and are not afraid of “blackmail” from the new leader. “AD cannot believe that the PS is obliged to support the government. This is not and will not happen,” emphasized Pedro Nuno Santos. The “responsible opposition” of the PS corresponds to the obligation to “defend its ideology and electoral program,” he concluded.
The party maintains its intention to approve the amended budget, limiting itself to issues of consensus. “I hope that there will be an initiative on the part of the prime minister to talk to the party, which believes that it is almost obligated to support the government,” he said.
However, it is “virtually impossible” for the PS to approve the state budget. “AD’s health care proposals are negative” and “tax cuts for companies are the wrong priority,” he said.
