The President of Mozambique and Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, said this Friday that the debate on the “selection process” of the ruling party’s candidate “is a priority” at the meeting of the organization’s Central Committee, calling for the discussion “without fear or reserve.”
“When we discuss the directive on the election of candidates for the Assembly of the Republic and members of the provincial assemblies, it will be an important opportunity for us to evaluate the work of the electoral offices at different levels, including the process of selecting Frelimo’s candidate for the October 9 elections as a priority,” Nyusi said.
The Mozambican head of state and leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) spoke in the opening speech of the third meeting of the ruling party’s Central Committee, the highest deliberative body between congresses.
Filipe Nyusi said that the meeting agenda included reports from the Political Commission, the Verification Committee, the Central Directorate for the Preparation of Local Elections (to be held in October 2023), a proposal for the party’s activity plan and budget for 2024, proposed legislative regulation and a proposed electoral directive candidates for deputies of the Assembly of the Republic and members of provincial assemblies.
The meeting will also discuss the balance of the economic and social plan and the state budget for 2023, information on the economic and social plan and the state budget for 2024 and other issues.
The agenda of the third meeting of the Central Committee was adopted by the members of the body by consensus.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
The current President of the Republic and Frelimo is constitutionally unable to run again for the position of head of state, as he is currently serving his second term as head of state after being elected in 2015 and 2019.
