Helder Fraguas, the “judge” of the new TVI program “A Sentença”, which premieres next Monday and which has much in common with the mythical program “O Juiz Decide” broadcast by the SIC in the 90s, was forcibly reformed by the Supreme Council of the Judiciary in 2008 for violation of “professional duties.” The case involved an incident in which he was accused of using language considered “obscene and inappropriate” on a website. In late 2006, the then magistrate appeared in an SIC report which quoted text in which he, commenting on the fact that PSP station agent Barreiro did not wish to identify himself during a telephone conversation, stated that such behavior was “cowardly” and ” cowardly.”
The texts that led to this trial were published on the website fraguasonline.com (still active) as well as in the regional newspaper O Mirante, for which Helder Fraguas, now 58, wrote a weekly column.
After graduating from the Faculty of Law of Lisbon in 1990, Fraguas worked as a notary, university teacher and Bar Association trainer, eventually becoming a judge, passing through several courts, including in Santa Rem, Almeirim, Seixal, Sesimbra and Cartacho. He also served as a member of the Management Board of the Center for Forensic Studies and the Rotary Club of Barreiro. In recent years he has returned to legal practice, taking part in programs such as “Você na TV” (TVI), “Queridas Manhãs” (SIC) or “A Tarde é Sua” (TVI).
ABOUT CM Contacted Hélder Fraguas’s office located in the Parque des Nations in Lisbon but received no response.
