The program of the government under the leadership of Luis Montenegro, presented this Wednesday to the Assembly of the Republic, confirms the commitment to quickly decide on the location of the new airport and to begin its construction as soon as possible.
“Complete the process of selecting the New Lisbon Airport and begin its construction as soon as possible, as well as other important infrastructure, namely the railway and the TGV high-speed train” is one of the measures included in the XXIV Program of the Constitutional Government. it was handed over this Wednesday by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pedro Duarte, to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.
The 184-page document makes little mention of the new airport, but it reiterates a commitment made by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro before his election to decide on the location of the infrastructure within days of taking office.
The government also emphasizes the need to “attract regular and diversified air transport to national airports” as well as “improve cargo and passenger handling conditions” at these infrastructures.
“The last decade has seen the aviation and airport sectors dominated by paralyzing decisions and indecision: the lack of capacity at Humberto Delgado Airport and the delay in choosing the best expansion option, as well as the difficult nationalization process of TAP, which leaves the company at a crossroads for its future,” it says in a program approved by the Council of Ministers.
The new government is building on a report prepared by the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), published on March 11, which recommended a single solution in Alcochet or Vendas Novas. However, he noted that Humberto Delgado + Santarem “could be the solution.”
The PSD decided to establish an internal working group to analyze the location of the new Lisbon airport after agreeing with the PS to establish a CTI to carry out a strategic environmental assessment.
