According to National Police data consulted by Lusa this Friday, Cape Verde recorded a 6% increase in crime in 2023 compared to the previous year, for a total of 22,838 incidents.
Over the past year, security forces have recorded 39 killings in the archipelago, most of them on Santiago island, six more than in 2022.
The suspects are mostly male and mostly use sharp weapons.
155 sexual crimes were also recorded, 99 against minors, which is 12 more than in 2022.
Police also recorded 2,399 cases of gender-based violence, which is 3% less than in 2022.
“This continues to be the second type of crime against people most frequently reported to the National Police,” and accounts for a fifth of the total number of crimes against people reported in 2023, according to police data.
Data from these security forces also includes 12,837 property crimes (105 fewer than in 2022).
