Minister says focus is on social media, but won’t close door to other solutions

The Health Secretary said this Friday that the government is focusing on strengthening the National Health Service (NHS) but is not closing the door to other solutions given the varied realities in the country.

“Our government program, which we are very focused and committed to, is very clear about the strengthening that we are going to provide to the National Health Service,” Ana Paula Martins told reporters after attending the final event. seminar at the University of Coimbra.

According to the minister, the focus will be on ensuring better management tools in the social security system, greater autonomy and “more conditions for health care facilities”, as well as the ability to provide a “better response”.

However, he acknowledged that the government will in no way close the door to finding the best solutions for each case and in each region.”

Ana Paula Martins was responding to a question from journalists about the government’s openness to the restoration of public-private partnerships (PPP) in light of the letter addressed today to the Minister by the Liberal Initiative (IL).

“As you understand, the country is very diverse. In each situation, we will have to adapt not only our response, the management model, but also, of course, be open to other possibilities,” he said.

Whatever the solution, the minister said it would need to “better serve people” by delivering “better health outcomes” and ensuring health workers are “motivated” to respond effectively.

“Efficiency aspects are fundamental to the sustainability of the NHS and health system to ensure we can deliver on our promise to the Portuguese to provide access to healthcare,” he stressed.

When asked by Lusa about Fernando Araujo’s continued leadership of the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service, Ana Paula Martins refused to answer, stressing that this is a situation of an “institutional nature” and that the focus is on ensuring improvements in the social protection system.

“We are all interested, as is our senior management, in making sure that the system works so that people get the answers they need, and that is our goal,” he stressed.
