The United Nations needs more than $400 million (€375.2 million) in humanitarian aid to Mozambique, but only 11% of that amount is available, the organization has warned.
“This is a difficult situation because we only have 11% of the amount needed,” said Paulo Serran, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance in Mozambique, in a statement reproduced today by public broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
Serrao said that most of the funds are intended to support victims of the war in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, while the other part of the funds is aimed at helping people affected by natural disasters, namely floods that hit the southern regions of Mozambique. region from Mozambique.
The official said international mobilization of humanitarian aid for Mozambique is difficult as the world grapples with multiple crises.
Since October 2017, Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency, with attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
After months of relative normalcy in the affected areas, the province saw new movements and attacks by insurgent groups a few months ago, restricting traffic at some points on the few paved roads leading to several areas.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021, supported by Rwanda with more than two thousand soldiers and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) liberating areas near natural gas projects.
