The parliamentary leader of the Liberal Initiative said this Thursday that the speech of the President of the Republic at the official meeting on April 25 was characterized by a return to the past in order to bypass the present and ignore the future.
This position regarding the content of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s speech was defended by Mariana Leitan in statements to journalists in parliament, in which she also criticized the recent statements of the head of state about the colonial period in the history of Portugal.
“The speech of the President of the Republic returned to the past, bypassed the present and ignored the future. We believe that returning to and celebrating the past is important, but it is also important to ensure continuity with the future and a commitment to the future,” he said.
From the point of view of the chairman of the Liberal Initiative faction, the head of state’s speech “was missing the part about what needs to be done for the future, since Portugal continues to be a country with weaknesses.”
“We need commitment from political agents to this future,” he added.
Mariana Leitão was then asked about Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s position on Portugal’s colonial period and possible reparations that should be paid to former colonies.
“The position of the President of the Republic went further and ultimately fueled senseless sectarianism. History is not limited to the current account between different countries. We do not reflect on some of the ideas expressed by the President of the Republic. Republic,” emphasized the parliamentary leader of the Liberal Initiative.
