Pollen concentrations in the air drop to moderate levels on the mainland and islands.

Pollen concentrations in the air are expected to drop to low or moderate levels next week in all regions of mainland Portugal and the islands, the Portuguese Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) said on Thursday.

According to SPAIC forecasts for the week of April 26 to May 2, “there will be a significant decrease in pollen concentrations in the atmosphere of mainland Portugal, with a low to moderate risk expected for patients with pollen allergies.”

This reduction should be due to the “atmospheric wash-off” effect caused by the rainfall expected to fall on mainland Portugal throughout the week.

According to Pollen Bulletin No. 06 sent to the Lusa agency, all regions of the mainland and islands should report “low to moderate pollen concentrations in the air.”

The continent’s atmosphere contains pollen grains of cypress, pine, oak, holm and cork oak, grasses, plantain, nettle, sorrel and nettle (including parietaria).

In particular, the regions of Algarve, Lisbon and Setúbal are experiencing pollination of Chaenopodiums, and the first olive pollen grains are beginning to appear in these regions, including the Beira Litoral region.

In the northern and central regions of the country, birch pollination is observed.

In the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, the pollen present in the atmosphere is predominantly composed of pine and cypress trees (and/or cryptomeria in the Azores), as well as nettle grasses (including parietaria), plantain and grasses.
