The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has sent a letter to the governing bodies of football (FIFA, UEFA and Conmebol) asking them to take concrete action to punish and raise awareness of racist behavior, the organization said this Friday.
This CBF position came a week after another attack on Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior: on January 26, a doll in his sports jersey was hung on the Madrid bridge ahead of the derby against Atlético in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. Merengue won 3-1.
In September, Vinicius was also the victim of racist abuse from Atlético de Madrid fans during another derby in and out of the stadium.
On Monday, the Spanish Commission against Violence in Sport also announced that Valladolid fans would be penalized for racist slurs against Vinicius during a league match at the end of December.
“It is very important that racism be fought resolutely. The number of cases that are multiplying against Vinicius and many other players is unacceptable,” CBF President Ednaldo Rodriguez said this Thursday at an official FIFA event in Rio de Janeiro.
Last Saturday, the leader traveled to Brasilia for a meeting with Minister of Justice Flavio Dino, which discussed the problems of racism in football and, in particular, the Vinicius case, uncovered by the CBF itself.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in office since January 1, recently passed a law toughening penalties for proven cases of racial discrimination.
