The 43-year-old athlete, who took part in the Aveiro Marathon this Sunday, suffered cardiovascular arrest during the race and eventually died, a source in the Aveiro city council told Lusa.
According to the source, the incident occurred at the 33rd kilometer, the victim was treated on the spot and taken alive to the hospital, where he died.
The athlete was Portuguese and lived in Greater Lisbon, he added.
The winner of the marathon was Moroccan Mohamed Chaaboud with a time of 02:09:19.290. The best Portuguese athlete in this race was Carlos Costa, who finished fifth.
The marathon brought together more than 20 thousand people of 91 nationalities to Aveiro.
Organized by Global Sport with the support of the Municipality of Aveiro and Turismo do Centro de Portugal and with the support of the Municipality of Ilhavo, the race was divided into four distances: marathon – 42 kilometers, half marathon – 21 kilometers, run, 10 kilometers, and walk, 5 kilometers.
