GNR identified 26 violations in the Leiria region to prevent illegal dumping

The Republican National Guard (NGN) identified 26 violations during an operation to prevent and identify those responsible for illegal discharges into water resources in the municipalities of Batalha, Leiria, Marinha Grande and Porto de Mos.

In information sent this Monday to the Lusa agency, the GNR reports that during the operation called “Clean Water”, which began on December 15, 2023 and ended on April 15, about 50 inspections were carried out, 26 violations were identified in the water sector, As a result, several notices of administrative violations were issued.

Among the cases, GNR identified 16 cases of discharge of degraded water into soil/water without any mechanism to ensure its treatment, two for non-compliance related to the spread of livestock wastewater on flooded soil, and another two due to lack of ownership of use resources.

“As part of these violations, 11 individuals and 15 legal entities were also identified,” GNR said.

A GNR source clarified that most of the 26 violations were registered in the municipality of Leiria.

According to the GNR, this operation aimed to address the numerous complaints registered in recent years regarding the pollution of water resources, with the aim of promoting the sustainability of the biodiversity of these resources by monitoring and identifying those responsible for illegal activities. , which endanger water bodies in these municipalities.

The GNR also said that through the Nature and Environment Service, “it is aware of this disaster, ensuring regular patrols in the worst affected areas”, adding that to report violations or clarify doubts, citizens can use the Environment and Territory SOS. Line (808200520).

In announcing this operation, the GNR announced that “daily and continuous monitoring activities will be carried out in the Lis River basin in the municipalities of Leiria, Marinha Grande, Batalha and Porto de Mos, in order to address the problem of direct and indirect wastewater discharges coming from manufacturing industry, as well as from agricultural and livestock activities, which are highly representative of the region.”

“Many watercourses in the Lys River basin have very dense vegetation on their banks, which does not allow for inspection and verification of the condition of the bottom along the entire length, therefore a water resources patrol model has been adopted, which has proven effective in detecting illegal activities of this kind,” they explained.
