ASAE seized about 18 tons of octopus and laced potatoes in Coimbra

The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) seized about 18 tons of octopus and potatoes with additives from an industrial plant located in the Coimbra region.

In a statement sent to Lusa on Tuesday, ASAE said the total value of the seized goods was 115 thousand euros and was destined for a national and European commercial network.

The seizure occurred after several investigative actions carried out by the Specialized Brigade for the Production of Animal Products of the Central Regional Office as part of the fight against illegal actions against public health.

The inspection operation was aimed at an industrial plant “to verify compliance with the conditions of storage and handling of fishery products in the Coimbra area.”

“As a result of the action, after checking the fraudulent practice of immersing food products in water, salt and additives for about three days in order to increase their weight, 17,814 kilograms of fish products – octopus and porpoises – were seized with fluctuations. varies from 17% to 42% in in the case of potato tentacles and from 22% to 70% in the case of octopus,” the statement said.

According to ASAE, “it has been decided to immediately suspend the repackaging activities of the products as the company has not received permission from the competent authority to carry out these activities.”

A case was also opened for an administrative offense “for failure to comply with the rules of fair information about food products, placing on the market products of animal origin without identification marks and lack of requirements for food products.”
