Mia Couto is against colonial reparations being a form of “blaming”

The Mozambican writer Mia Couto said this Thursday in a statement to Luse that the debt of African countries could be one aspect of a possible process of reparations for the colonial period, but not as a form of “blame”.

“What we want from history is that historical truth should not be erased, but that it should not be the basis for any sense of guilt. the context is a completely different story,” Mia Couto said.

According to the writer, “reparations make sense” if they are “discussed not on the basis of any sense of historical guilt” but “on the basis that African countries” – because “Brazil may have its own position” – “they consider it worthy and legal to build a bridge built in the present.”
