The report, published this Friday, states that the way work is carried out on the Porto Metrobus between Rotonda da Boavista and Praça do Imperio has “a number of shortcomings”, especially with regard to minimizing restrictions.
“The way this project is being carried out has a number of shortcomings, failing to minimize its negative impact and even jeopardizing the safety of those who must travel on foot or in any vehicle through the affected areas. streets,” the report of the Working Group for Monitoring Investments in Public Transport, created on February 19 under the Municipal Assembly of Porto at the proposal of the HDZ, emphasizes, published on the municipality’s website.
This document, which was sent to the President of Metro do Porto, the President of the City Council of Porto and the members of the Municipal Assembly of Porto, states that work of this size always causes inconvenience, inconvenience that must be kept to a minimum by those responsible for the project, then what not happening.
Among the identified problems, which in addition to being described in the report are accompanied by photographs, are areas designated for pedestrian traffic.
According to the document, during the intervention on the sidewalks of several sections of Avenida da Boavista, measures were not taken to ensure the comfort and safety of pedestrians in alternative traffic areas.
Most of the alternative paths have a dirt gravel floor that turns to mud when it rains, and this is compounded by the fact that many have uneven floors, making it difficult for people with limited mobility or with prams to cross, he adds.
Therefore, the working group recommends temporary paving of these areas with bituminous material or the installation of non-slip metal slabs, as well as eliminating uneven access levels by installing ramps.
Additionally, the report says some of the alternative sidewalks created for pedestrians are “too narrow,” making it difficult for two pedestrians to cross face-to-face in many areas, and others have irregular cross profiles due to constant pedestrian traffic. stalls (mesh metal protective structures and/or barriers/dividing pins between sidewalks and roadways).
That’s why the report, written by CDU municipal group leader Rui Sa, proposes widening and improving temporary sidewalks.
Another issue raised in the document concerns signage failures in vehicular areas, namely “lack of care” in updating/placing vertical signage in situations where horizontal signage remains original.
“These situations, in addition to the confusion they create in traffic (already difficult due to the works), can lead to road accidents for which responsibility will be difficult to establish,” the report emphasizes.
The document also highlights that there are temporary bus stops on Avenida da Boavista that do not meet the minimum rules for comfort and safety.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT, also known as Porto’s “metrobus”) will be a green hydrogen bus that will operate on a dedicated road on Avenida da Boavista and alongside cars on Avenida Maréchal Gomes da Costa, with service provided by the Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do. Porto (STCP).
