The National Council of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM, the country’s third political force) this Sunday supported the candidacy of party leader Loutero Simango for the presidency of the republic in the general elections on October 9.
“This fight belongs to all of us. This battle is a collective battle, it is a battle that will lead us to victory,” said Lutero Simango, who will run for president with the support of the party he led after the death of his brother Daviz Simango in 2021, who also ran two years earlier for the presidency with the support of MDM.
“The main goal since the founding of the party in 2009 has been to gain political power through the democratic process, and this will happen now, on October 9,” said the MDM president and leader of the party’s parliamentary bench, promising “change.” and reform” and the implementation of the “vision of Mozambique for all”.
Albano Cariz, the current mayor of Beira, province of Sofala, where the national council of the MDM was held, admitted that he ran in support of a possible presidential candidacy, but in the end did not advance, declaring this Sunday his support for the leader of the party, so the name Lutero Simango was unanimous approved by 80 voting members.
Lutero Simango is the first known presidential candidate to be supported by one of Mozambique’s three major parties.
The central committee of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the ruling party) has been meeting since Friday to decide on a candidate, but still without success, and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the largest opposition party) has only held an elective congress each time. May 15 and 16.
The deadline for submitting lists of presidential candidates for the October elections to the Constitutional Council is June 10.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
Filipe Nyusi, the current head of state and leader of Frelimo, can no longer participate in presidential elections because he has exhausted the two-term constitutional limit.
