On Sunday, TV channels presented a new proposal for the European elections debate.

RTP, SIC and TVI presented a new proposal for the European election debate on Sunday afternoon, a sector source told Lusa this Monday.

Expresso reported that the PS and the Democratic Alliance (AD) abandoned the debate model proposed by the RTP, SIC and TVI for the June 9 European elections, in which 28 face-to-face meetings were planned between the heads of the party list with representation in the Assembly of the Republic.

According to a sector source contacted by Lusa, “yesterday the three TV channels presented a new proposal to the parties.” [domingo] At the end of the day”.

The source did not provide details about the proposal.

PS and AD, according to Expresso, justified their refusal of the model by the fact that there will be a large number of duels, which will affect the election campaign, and admitted that they agree to a lighter calendar.

On Saturday, the PS leader expressed the party’s readiness to take part in debates with all candidates for the European Championship, considering that the proposal of 28 people face to face was excessive, since campaigning is not only carried out on television.

According to Pedro Nuno Santos, his party should “campaign in the street, in the territory, among the people” and not spend “all the time in debates and commentaries on debates.”

The head of the AD list for Europeans, Sebastian Bugalho, said on Sunday that the debate model for this type of election was unprecedented and that television interests would need to be aligned with the election calendar.

“The debate model promoted on television has never been used in European elections. Naturally, candidates still have to get used to the fact that this model was proposed,” said the AD candidate.
