This Wednesday, PAN considered that the location of the new airport in Alcochete “is disastrous for the environment and fiscally irresponsible”, and the Prime Minister countered that the party’s arguments taken to the limit would mean that there would be no planes.
During a two-week debate with the prime minister in parliament, PAN representative Ines de Souza Real noted that the environmental aspect when choosing a new airport was “systematically ignored.”
“The Prime Minister boasted about this option [Alcochete]but we forget that the climate has changed, and political parties must also change, and so does governance,” he said.
According to the PAN representative, “it is unacceptable that a decision of this magnitude is based on an option that not only has already outdated views” but is also not “the most viable” from an economic point of view. .
“We’re talking about a thousand euros for every Portuguese citizen if there are no cost overruns,” he warned, then questioned “whether the prime minister is ready for the environment to be part of the equation of any solution for the airport.”
“There is simply no viable solution without the environment,” he said.
In his response, Luis Montenegro assured that the government is capable of “protecting all environmental values and being able to mitigate the impacts that investments of this scale have on ecosystems, biodiversity and all the impacts of all nature.”
But “if we take the arguments presented here to the limit, we can conclude that the deputy wants there to be no planes, no air transport and no airport,” he said.
Montenegro said the selection of the new site was based on a methodology that included environmental assessment work, adding that it believed this was the most appropriate route.
