About 60,000 clinicians will start voting on Tuesday to elect the chairman of the Order of Physicians in a second round of elections between Carlos Cortés and Rui Nunez that will last until February 16.
There were six candidates in the first round of elections for the period 2023/2025, which took place from January 10 to 19, and, given the results, none of them received the necessary majority to win the first round, Carlos Cortés went to the second round and Rui Nunez, belongs to the Order of Physicians (OM).
Out of 61,133 registered doctors, only 23,634 (38.66%) voted in the first round of elections to elect a new president to replace urologist Miguel Guimarães in office, according to OM data.
According to the voting results, Carlos Cortes received 6,059 votes (28.01%), Ruy Nunez 4,045 votes (18.70%), Alexander Valentim Lourenço 3,840 (17.75%), Bruno Maia 3,360 (15.53%) , Jaime Branco 2,318 (10.72%). ) and Fausto Pinto 2009 votes (9.29%).
“Together for health” was the motto of Candidate Carlos Cortés, a specialist in clinical pathology and President of the regional branch of the OM Center in this mandate, who proposes to lead the Order “autonomous, independent and always intervening, that is, not complacent and not submissive” and guarantees that he would be a “unifying and intimate” president.
Rui Nunez, an otorhinolaryngologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Porto, said he was running for a “profound and structural” health care reform that modernizes and integrates health centers with hospitals and creates conditions for doctors to carry out their mission “through a magistrate of influence” .
