Army doctor and head of INEM becomes new chief executive of SNS

This Wednesday, the Ministry of Health announced that it had selected Dr. António Gandra d’Almeida to replace Fernando Araujo as executive director of the SNS, adding that the lieutenant colonel has extensive experience in emergency medical care.

The ministry statement indicated that the new person in charge was the director of the northern regional delegation of the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (INEM), head of the health team carrying out hospital and pre-hospital care and that in the Armed Forces he had accumulated leadership and coordination.

The ministry, led by Ana Paula Martins, also said that on Tuesday it received a report on the activities of the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE – SNS), “which will now be subject to analysis by the Ministry of Health.”

Fernando Araújo went to the Ministry of Health on Tuesday and will be heard in parliament this Wednesday to explain the reasons for his resignation in April.

In a statement, the department said that the composition of the remaining DE-SNS team will be announced “soon” and that names will be submitted to the Committee on Recruitment and Selection of Personnel for Public Administration (CReSAP).

The ministry also states that “the government thanks Professor Fernando Araujo and his team for the work done at SNS and wishes them great professional and personal success.”

Fernando Araujo, who succeeded Fernando, is 44 years old, a lieutenant colonel in the medical service in the permanent ranks of the Portuguese army and a graduate of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon.

António Gandra d’Almeida has academic and professional specializations including additional training at the Military Academy, a postgraduate degree in military health, a European Master of Disaster Medicine and a specialization in general surgery, as well as competence in health care management, emergency care. and the Military Medical Services of the Medical Association.

According to the information, the new executive director was in charge of Vias Verdes in the INEM central region from 2014 to 2019, and was responsible for the installation and coordination of the Barreiro Ambulance and Medical Resuscitation (VMER) between 2016 and 2018. issued by the ministry.

He also collaborated in several commissions of the General Staff of the Army, EMGFA and the Ministry of Health, including: ULSGE Trauma Commission – Local Health Unit of Gaia and Espinho, Commission for the Reconstruction of the Emergency Services ULSRA – Local Health Unit of the Aveiro Region, National Trauma Unit. Commission, Commission for Critical Illnesses of the Algarve and Commission for the Enhancement of Competence in Military Medicine.

When he submitted his resignation along with his team, Dr. Fernando Araujo requested that his resignation from DE-SNS take effect the day after the document is handed over at the end of this month, which was previously required by the Ministry of Health. , which was accepted.

The dismissal of DE-SNS led the PS parliamentary group to demand that Fernando Araújo be heard before the Health Commission.

The Executive Directorate began its activities on January 1, 2023, in accordance with the new Regulations of the National Health Service (NHS), proposed by then Minister Marta Temido, with the aim of coordinating the response to assistance of all units of the SNS and modernizing its management.
