This Friday, Parliament unanimously approved a resolution presented by the sole PAN deputy, Ines de Souza Real, to establish domestic violence service units in the DIAP in all districts.
As part of this initiative, the Government is recommended to take measures to ensure that, by the end of next year, the establishment of departments of investigation and prosecution (DIAP) in all judicial districts across the country to assist victims of domestic violence. .
The diploma states that on March 7, 2019, after the signing of a protocol between the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General’s Office, DIAP was created with a specialized department for investigating crimes related to domestic violence or victims of crimes related to gender violence. assistance offices (GAV) supporting the prosecutor’s office.
However, according to PAN, “despite the fact that this was provided for almost 15 years ago in current legislation and is a requirement of the Istanbul Convention, since 2019 only six offices have been opened in DIAP, namely in Braga, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon. West, Lisbon North and Faro.”
According to PAN, “more than 33,500 consultations were provided to nearly 5,500 victims of domestic violence,” resulting in “opinions that enable prosecutors to make faster and more effective decisions.”
“The magistrates and technicians, even if insufficient, believe that this methodology has saved lives and are therefore advocating for the government to increase investment in the project,” the PAN thesis said.
PAN also quotes the coordinator of the Domestic Violence Unit of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) as saying that “if GAV existed in all counties, it would cost about half a million euros a year.”
According to the party led by Ines de Sousa Real, “the creation of GAV in all districts, in addition to being affordable, especially in a budget surplus, could save lives by intensifying the work carried out to closely monitor the victim.” “.
