Mortagua warns that “the European project is under threat” and is running in these elections

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua warned this Monday that “the European project is under threat” in the face of a “belligerent environment of war, violence, hatred and division”, stressing the importance of the vote on the 9th.

“Europe is in danger and this project is in danger precisely because of this culture of hatred that is invading the European Union and which irresponsibly believes that war is the solution to every problem,” Mariana Mortagua said in statements to journalists.

On the first day of the official campaign for the European elections, the head of the BE list, Catarina Martins, was visited by the party coordinator, who accompanied her to the street in Moscavida, in the Lisbon area.

“You don’t have to be very attentive to what’s happening in Europe to feel the belligerent atmosphere of war, violence, hatred and division. Europe is at a turning point, at a very important moment when everything is being decided,” he emphasized. .

Mortagua warned of the return of “shadows of the past” to those who “do not respect what we have learned in the post-war period, those who do not respect that Europe was built on this knowledge of fascism and war and was therefore founded on the values of democracy, solidarity and cooperation.”

In this context, Mariana Mortagua considered it important to have “a strong and serious voice in the European Union that does not succumb to militarism, does not succumb to alliances with the far right, does not ally itself with hatred and violence.” just to maintain power, that’s what we see from the right and the far right in Europe.”

“The future of the European Union and the European project is at stake in these elections, and that is why we take them so seriously,” he stressed.

Party list leader Katarina Martins believes that “the problem is the right, not just the far right.”

“The right is the problem, and it’s not just the far right, because when Sebastian Bugalho [cabeça-de-lista da Aliança Democrática, que junta PSD, CDS-PP e PPM] said in the debate that he would join me in opposing any rollback of women’s rights, the truth is that he is running alongside the far right, with whom his candidate for the presidency of the European Commission is already negotiating the next commission,” criticized, having referring to Ursula von der Leyen of the European People’s Party (EPP).

Katarina Martins believes that “this election is crucial for everyone, but also for women,” recalling that this Monday marks the 24th anniversary of the first law introduced by BE, which proposed making domestic violence a public crime.

Mariana Mortagua was also asked about the meeting of the Council of Ministers this Monday, which announced the repeal of the measures taken by the previous socialist executive regarding local accommodation or forced or compulsory rentals.

“The fact that the Council of Ministers has dedicated itself to repealing a law that has never been applied and which was not created to be applied clearly shows the emptiness of this government’s housing policy,” he criticized.

The blocker considered that the SDP/CDS-PP minority government “is not adding any response to the price of housing loans, nor to the price of rents that continue to rise, nor to people who do not know whether they are going to be evicted.”

“They’re giving more tax breaks, more incentives for real estate speculation, repealing a law that was never used or intended to be used, and making that law the flagship of their housing policy,” he complained.
