The representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, receives on Tuesday the parties elected at the first regional meetings on Sunday, given the “urgency of finding a government solution.”
“Since the results of the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira have become known, the representative of the Republic, given the urgency of finding a government solution that will allow the government program and the new regional budget to be approved as soon as possible. “From now on, we will begin to listen to the parties represented in parliament,” Palácio de Sao Lourenço said in a note published on Monday.
Also, according to the published note, the purpose of the meetings is to agree on “formal and political conditions” for “proceeding with the appointment of the chairman of the XV regional government.”
The cycle of meetings will begin at 10 a.m. with the re-election of PAN – People-Animals-Nature MP Monica Feitas, followed by the representative of the Liberal Initiative (IL), which managed to retain parliamentarian Nuno Morna.
At the end of the morning, Ireneu Barreto meets with representatives of the CDS-PP, which has elected two deputies, including leader José Manuel Rodríguez, who has served as President of the Madeira Parliament since 2019.
In the afternoon, at 14.00, it will be Chega’s turn, maintaining the parliamentary group of four deputies, followed by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), which increased its representation from five to nine parliamentarians.
At 16:00 the PS, the second-largest opposition party which continues to hold 11 seats in the hemisphere and is led by Paulo Cafofo, who suggested on election night that an alternative to PSD governance could be created, will meet.
The PSD, led by Miguel Albuquerque, which declared victory with 19 deputies but without an absolute majority, is the last party to face Ireneu Barreto.
After Miguel Albuquerque said on Sunday that he was ready to provide a “government of stability”, on Monday the PS and JPP announced that they would present to the representative of the Republic in Madeira a “joint government decision” and hold a dialogue with the remaining parties, with the exception of PSD and Chegi. “to gain stronger support in parliament.”
The general meeting to sum up the election results will also take place today, starting at 9 am.
There will also be a PSD/Madeira political committee meeting today at 6:30 p.m., with media statements scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeira parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the case on investigation of suspicions of corruption.
