This Thursday, the Spanish parliament approved an amnesty for Catalan separatists convicted or wanted by justice due to the region’s attempt at self-determination, which culminated in an illegal referendum and unilateral declaration of independence in 2017.
The amnesty law received 177 votes in favor, of 349 MPs voting, 172 against and no abstentions in the final vote in parliament this Thursday, which ended a six-month legislative process.
The amnesty was a demand of the independence parties Left Republicans of Catalonia (ERC) and Together for Catalonia (JxCat, former autonomous region president Carles Puigdemont) to make the last government of socialist Pedro Sánchez viable last November.
