The head of the European AD list met this Monday with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Portugal and said that he hopes to “one day” see Ukrainian MEPs in the European Parliament, abandoning “false differences” with the PS on this issue.
Sebastian Bugalho was received this Monday by Ambassador Marina Mikhailenko at the Ukrainian Embassy in Lisbon and gave statements to journalists following a meeting that lasted almost an hour.
“We left a commitment, combined with the commitment of the government and Portugal, to Ukrainian democracy: to continue to support Ukraine militarily, politically and financially, not only until Russia is defeated, but also during the recovery process,” he said.
Along with the Ukrainian ambassador, the candidate for the European Parliament said that he feels “the desire for Ukraine to defend itself as quickly as possible and work for peace.”
Asked if he saw differences in the PS agenda regarding support for Ukraine, Sebastian Bugalho was glad that there were none, shortly after emerging from a debate with eight heads of the list organized by radio stations.
“If there is one thing that we as Portuguese democrats should be proud of, it is that the founding parties of Portuguese democracy did not hesitate for a second in their support for Ukraine. I will not distort differences with the PS on such fundamental issues, a worthy, patriotic and democratic cause,” he said.
When asked whether there was a specific request from the Ukrainian ambassador about the future process of the country’s accession to the European Union, he replied that “he did not set any deadlines, but only the desire to be part of the European family.”
For the AD list chief, this is “another point of consensus” between the previous PS governments and the current PSD/CDS-PP chief.
“Portugal stands for the expansion of Ukraine and integration into the European project. I hope that one day I will attend a plenary meeting of the European Parliament and see a Ukrainian member of the European Parliament next to me,” he said.
Asked whether this goal would concern the next five years or a possible second term, Bugalho replied: “My hope lies in Ukraine, not in my mandates,” he said.
Sebastian Bugalho said there were “common concerns” about nuclear and food safety at the meeting, with the candidate noting that Ukraine looks to Portugal as an “example” in renewable energy that it wants to emulate. , in the future, in your country.
“Ukraine is determined to be able to defend itself, and Portugal will be on Ukraine’s side until Russia is defeated, and on the fastest and most effective path to peace. Ukraine is concerned about peace, Ukraine wants peace, and so does Portugal,” he said. said.
At this meeting, the head of the AD list was accompanied by MEP candidates Ana Miguel Pedro, Hélder Sousa Silva and Lidia Pereira, and he made sure to give the floor to *the only sitting PSD MEP who is on the European list on June 9th. and Coalition Program Coordinator.
“When I visited Kyiv last year, we reaffirmed our commitment to revitalize the European solidarity body, European Volunteering, as soon as possible, so that young Europeans could actively participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine,” said Lydia Pereira.
At this meeting, he explained, the AD candidates confirm their commitment “as soon as possible” to activate “all mechanisms and involve the support and solidarity of European youth in the restoration of Ukraine.”
The head of the PS list for Europeans, Marta Temido, also met on May 20 with the Ambassador of Ukraine in Lisbon.
