The Health Minister will go to Parliament this Wednesday to provide clarification on the dismissal of the previous chief executive of the National Health Service, the emergency plan for the sector and the situation at INEM.
These are some of the problems that have marked Ana Paula Martins’ first two months in office and which have led to requests for hearings at the Health Commission from the parliamentary benches of the PS, Chega and SDP.
The Socialists are set to hear from the minister about the resignation Fernando Araújo submitted at the end of April after heading the NHS executive committee for about 15 months, arguing that he did not want to be an obstacle to the government’s policies and measures that were considered necessary to implement.
The doctor was also heard by deputies on May 22, the same day the Ministry of Health announced that Dr. António Gandra d’Almeida had been chosen to coordinate the work of this body, which is responsible for managing the various units that make up the network. National Health Service (SNS).
Ana Paula Martins will also explain to MPs the recent health action plan, approved by the government last week and consisting of 54 urgent, priority and structural measures divided into five axes.
In presenting the document, the Prime Minister announced that the plan aims to maximize the resource utilization of social networks, but also the complementary role of the social and private sectors to improve the delivery of assistance to users.
Luis Montenegro said that with this set of measures the government does not intend to “sell the illusion” that SNS’s difficulties will be quickly resolved, arguing that the sector faces “deep and structural” problems that have accumulated over the years.
INEM’s financial and operational position will also be explained by Ana Paula Martins at a hearing on Chegi’s request, which will take place a day after the institute’s president admitted that the degradation of the service was “undeniable” and defended the need to strengthen the budget.
At the Health Committee, Luis Meira assured that he “does not hold his position” and that if the Minister of Health decides to dismiss him, he will leave his duties “without any problems.”
