I will be at the stadium for the first game and I hope it will not be the last time,” Luis Montenegro said, speaking to reporters after about a 30-minute visit to the stadium. Cidade de Futebol in Oeiras, which is the headquarters and sports complex of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
In addition to promoting his presence in Leipzig, Germany, the Prime Minister explained that he visited the Portuguese delegation with a “message of confidence and pride” and highlighted the successful journey of coach Roberto Martinez’s team.
“Everything has gone well so far, with a great qualifying campaign. The whole country is supporting the national team, they are full of hope and confidence that this will be a difficult competition. We are excited and proud of what the Team has already done and can do,” he said.
Montenegro also highlighted the “accumulated talent” that currently exists in the national team, and also expressed words of gratitude to the FPF.
“I must express my deep gratitude for the work that the FPF has done for the country, for the sport and for Portuguese sport. Out of “respect for the FPF,” Montenegro has so far refused to comment on the government’s proposal for an IRS in the Assembly of the Republic, but nevertheless left a message.
“Like the national team, this government has scored a lot of goals and will continue to do so,” he concluded.
Before talking to reporters, Montenegro watched the start of the Portuguese national team’s training and, when the whole team gathered on the field, left words for the players in the company of FPF President Fernando Gomes and coach Roberto Martinez.
Before visiting the rest of the Cidade do Futebol facilities, the Prime Minister greeted all the players, as well as the entire technical team of the Portuguese national team.
Captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruben Neves, still on holiday, were not present.
