Celebrations of July 10th continue today with Marcelo and Montenegro in Switzerland.

Portugal Day celebrations continue from Tuesday in Switzerland, with the President and Prime Minister celebrating June 10 along with the world’s second largest community of Portuguese expats.

Following the Portugal Day celebrations, Camões and the Portuguese communities in the three municipalities of Leiria district affected by the 2017 fires – Pedrogão Grande, Figueiro dos Vinhos and Castanheira de Pera – and Coimbra, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luis Montenegro were among them. Tuesday and Wednesday in Switzerland, their first trip abroad together.

The celebrations will begin on Tuesday afternoon in Geneva with a meeting with students teaching Portuguese abroad, who will have the opportunity to ask questions of Marcelo and Montenegro, followed by a meeting with the Portuguese community, culminating with a concert by fado singer Kuki. Roseta.

On Wednesday the celebrations will take place in Zurich, but only after a “stop” in the capital Bern for a meeting and lunch with the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd.

In Zurich, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luis Montenegro have planned meetings with representatives of the Portuguese community and with the community itself, the latter also ending with a musical moment – a classical music concert by young Portuguese musicians, which will complete the double program of the celebration. in Switzerland.

The parliamentary delegation for this “second part” of the Portugal Day celebrations – the first that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa celebrates together with the current Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who took office at the beginning of April last year – consists of deputies Hugo Carneiro (PSD), Pedro Coimbra ( PS), Rui Paulo Sousa (Cega), Mariana Leitan (Liberal Initiative), Fabian Figueiredo (Bloc de Esquerda), Alfredo Maia (PCP), Paulo Muacho (Livre) and Paulo Nuncio (CDS-PP).

Upon taking over the leadership of the state in 2016, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, together with then Prime Minister António Costa and with the participation of both, launched an unprecedented model of double celebration of Juneteenth, first in Portugal and then in Portuguese communities abroad.

Switzerland became the seventh foreign country to host this celebration, after France (2016), Brazil (2017), USA (2018), Cape Verde (2019), UK (2022) and South Africa (2023). In 2020 and 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only ceremonies were held in Portugal.

The President of the Republic, who already made an official visit to Switzerland in 2016, has new commitments in the Swiss country at the end of the week, as he will lead the Portuguese delegation to the Peace Summit for Ukraine, which will take place near Lucerne. on the 15th and 16th, and at which he will be accompanied by the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
