A man in his seventies has been blamed for the fire in Vila Poca de Aguiar, which was caused by unauthorized arson that got out of control and burned a hectare of bushland, a source told GNR on Thursday.
Members of the forestry advocacy team from the GNR Conservation Core responded to the forest fire warning on Wednesday and found on the spot that the fire was caused by burning piles to destroy the remnants of the forest.
The GNR Vila Real Territorial Command said in a statement that unauthorized burning got out of control, causing a fire that engulfed about a hectare of bush.
Following police action, the 75-year-old man was charged and the facts were referred to the Judicial Court of Vila Pouca de Aguiar.
In a week that saw several fires in the Vila Real area, this is the second person GNR blames for unsanctioned arson that got out of control.
In 2022, the Vila Real Territorial Command identified 46 forest fire suspects, 10 of whom were arrested at the scene of the crime.
GNR has confirmed that arson is one of the main causes of fires in Portugal, that incineration, landfill and campfire burning is prohibited whenever there is a “very high” or “maximum” level of fire danger in the countryside”, depending on permit or prior authorization . communication in other periods;
